There are three ways to color the hair, permanent, semi-permanent, and temporary. These ways for coloring the hair are described respectively at the below.

Permanent Color

Permanent color is the way for someone who wants to keep his or her hair color until cutting, growing out, or over coloring of the hair. The peroxide that comes in 10, 20, 30, and 40 volumes are needed for permanent hair color. The volume represents the strength and processing time for the color, which means that the peroxide of lower number of volume processes slowly while the peroxide of higher number of volume processes faster. However, you should know that coloring the wig is totally different from coloring the hair. So, it would be better idea that the wig would be taken to a specialist for coloring. If you want to color the wig by yourself, you should have experience of wig coloring with a great deal of knowledge.

Semi-permanent & Temporary Colors

Semi-permanent color: You can keep your hair color for 4 to 6 weeks once you color the hair using semi-permanent, and it could be faded by shampooing. The hair texture on the wig won?t be changed by coloring of semi-permanent, but will be changed temporarily. You should know that semi-permanent color is the most effective way if you want your hair to be dark.

Temporary color is the same as color rinse and it lasts from shampoo to shampoo. Temporary color is only beneficial when you want darker wigs. If you want light wigs, you may have to shop the wigs in light shades.

Directions and Test for Coloring Wig

You have to know that the directions specified on the box of coloring kit should be followed without regard to the ways of coloring, permanent, semi-permanent, or temporary. If you don?t follow the directions on the coloring kit box, the wig coloring could result in too light, too dark, a change in hair texture for the wig, or uneven wig hair color. Wig hair usually colored with the wig on a canvas or Styrofoam block. So you have to protect the canvas or Styrofoam block with a plastic cap or Saran Wrap.

You?d better to test a strand on the wig to see the result of coloring in advance. The test for strand of hairs is performed mostly on the nape area of the wig. Place the hair strand in an aluminum foil with a proper amount and mix the color with following the directions specified on coloring kits. Then apply the color to the hair strand and leave it on during the required time as specified on the coloring kits. You can use a spray bottle to rinse the hair and then can dry the hair using towel-dry and blow-dry to see the result of coloring. Finally, you can take the hair strand outside once the strand is dried and view the color.

The Steps for Coloring Wig or Hairpiece

1. Clean the wig or hairpiece if it is dirty
2. Pin the wig or hairpiece to the canvas or styrofoam block.
3. Select the color and read directions carefully.
4. Apply the color to the wig or hairpiece thoroughly and fast. The wig or hairpiece will receive hair color quickly in most cases. You should apply the peroxide only to dry hair. However, you should know that the peroxide may destroy or deteriorate the foundation of the wig or hairpiece and should be careful not to saturate the foundation with the color.
5. Take strand tests every 5 minutes to make sure satisfactory results.
6. Rinse the wig or hairpiece thoroughly after the processing time is appropriate.
7. Shampoo the wig or hairpiece thoroughly according to the directions specified on the box of color kits.
8. Rinse after shampooing the wig or hairpiece.
9. Apply a cream rinse or conditioner to the wig or hairpiece.
10. Comb the hairpiece into the desired style.
11. Dry the hairpiece thoroughly.
